Following three days rich in new ideas and solutions for tomorrow’s smart cities, the Berlin premiere of Metropolitan Solutions has just drawn to a successful close. Some 4,000 experts from science and industry plus decision-makers and government officials from cities around the world gathered at the CityCube complex to discuss new ways of making cities more sustainable, internationally competitive and livable.

Comprising 27 conferences and workshops with 450 top-notch speakers and featuring 130 industrial-sector exhibitors, the revamped Metropolitan Solutions show in Berlin has skyrocketed to virtually instant success as the world’s biggest combined exhibition and congress on smart, green urban development. Thematically, the show was right on target, covering all the big issues and challenges facing cities today – everything from energy sustainability, transportation infrastructure and intelligent lighting solutions to the role of intelligent sensor networks.

"Metropolitan Solutions is a truly unique event. It encompasses 27 independently organized and staged conferences, so it has the breadth and depth of scope needed to appeal to a wide range of urban decision-makers and bring them together for quality dialogue."

Dr. Jochen Köckler, the Deutsche Messe Managing Board member in charge of Metropolitan Solutions

The bid to leverage Berlin’s cosmopolitan appeal to help position Metropolitan Solutions as a key international meeting hub for smart, sustainable urban development is definitely working, with around 60 percent of the show’s attendees this year coming from outside Germany. The event was popular both with municipal decision-makers and with the thinkers and experts who advise them on their decisions. It attracted high-power delegations from major urban centers around the world, including cities in Europe, Israel, China and Thailand. The speaker lineup featured such prominent officials as Violeta Bulc (EU Commissioner for Transport), Günther Oettinger (EU Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society) and Peter Ramsauer (former German Transport Minister).
